BUSINESSES BARRED FROM USING RELIGIOUS SYMBOLS OR SEMANTICS IN TRADEMARK APPLICATIONS.
The Russian Orthodox Church and Rospatent have teamed up on a bill proposing a ban on registering trademarks with religious symbols or meanings. This document, expected to be submitted to the State Duma for consideration before the end of the spring session, would also amend the Civil Code to prevent commercial organizations from using religious connotations in their names. Examples include names such as «Monk’s Soul”, «Sinner’s Confession», «Gentle Nun», «Church Rites» etc.
The proposed amendments aim to prohibit granting exclusive rights to any entity, including religious organizations, for using religious symbols and names of saints.
It is stipulated, however, that the existing trademarks with religious references, registered before the entry into force of the new Law, will not be affected.
This initiative finds support beyond the Orthodox Church. Damir Mukhetdinov, First Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Muslim administration, expressed strong disapproval at the misuse of the «halal» emblem, particularly on products containing non-halal ingredients, like pork.
Mikhail Tyurenkov, a prominent figure within the Orthodox Church, believes this move would fulfill «the long-standing aspirations of millions of believers.»
